From Padova to La Verna

Saint Anthony’s Way (Il Cammino di Sant’Antonio) is one of the great pilgrimage routes of northern and central Italy, ideally retracing the biographical milestones and spiritual legacy of the Saint of Lisbon across Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany. Originating from the Sanctuaries of Camposampiero and the majestic Basilica in Padua, the itinerary initially develops along the Po Valley, changing its character radically once past Bologna. As it crosses the Apennine ridge, the path winds through places of extraordinary historical and devotional impact—such as the Hermitage of Montepaolo, the Saint’s first Italian home—before strategically converging toward Chiusi della Verna, the terminus where the Anthonian memory blends indissolubly with Franciscan mysticism.

Unlike purely local trails, the Anthonian way stands out for the geographical complexity of its route, which transitions from the regularity of lowland watercourses to the altimetric ruggedness of the Gessi Bolognesi and the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. For those tackling the Romagna and Tuscan legs, the itinerary offers a technical and emotional immersion into a landscape made of steep ridges, centuries-old forests, and historic mountain passes like the Passo dei Prati della Burraia and Camaldoli. Today, the trail is fully integrated into the national network of historic routes, comprehensively structured and supported by a hospitality network linked to local communities and Friars Minor convents, offering modern wayfarers uniform signage.

How to reach La Verna with Public Transport

How to get to La Verna by public transport
You can reach the Sanctuary by bus from Bibbiena, Chitignano or Pieve Santo Stefano.

Not all bus routes pass by the Sanctuary. In that case, it is best to get off at La Beccia and walk up to the Sanctuary along the old cobbled road (a 15-minute walk).
Alternatively, get off at Chiusi della Verna in the village and walk up to the Sanctuary through the Bosco delle Fate (a 25-minute walk).

Timetables:

To get to Bibbiena, you can take the bus from Florence or the train from Arezzo.

To get to Pieve Santo Stefano, you can take the bus from San Sepolcro or, via Romagna, the bus from Cesena to Bagno di Romagna and then the bus from there to Pieve Santo Stefano

By Car? Here's where to park

Car parks at the Sanctuary of La Verna charge a fee all year round, whilst those at La Beccia charge a fee from 1 April to 31 October.

For free parking, we recommend two car parks in the village of Chiusi della Verna:
